A practical 8-week course for anyone who wants to learn how to paint with oils independently.

You’ll build a solid foundation in oil painting, develop your artistic eye and colour sense, and learn the essential techniques step by step.

Each lesson includes a practical painting project completed with the guidance of the teacher.

Eight lessons, step by step

Materials & the basics
Oil paints and their properties, grounds, brushes and care, colour mixing.
Practice: a quick observational study.
Oil painting techniques
Brushwork, layering and alla prima. Composition and how to approach a painting step by step.
Practice: an observational study.
Light, tone & space
Value, contrast, volume, atmospheric perspective and creating depth in landscape.
Practice: grisaille.
Colour & texture
Colour theory, warm and cool colours, complementary colours, colour harmony. Working with a palette knife and impasto techniques.
Practice: a palette-knife painting.
Architectural landscape
Perspective, proportions, scale, light and shadow, and architectural details.
Practice: a landscape with architectural elements.
Nuance & different textures
Working with subtle colour relationships and painting different materials and textures.
Practice: a still life with contrasting textures.
The expressive power of painting
How colour and imagery create emotion, with examples from great works of art.
Practice: a master copy.
Painting without rules
Decorative and mixed-media techniques. Working with texture pastes, fabric, paper and gold.
Practice: creating an expressive mixed-media composition.

What’s included

Materials and home practice

All essential studio materials are provided during the classes: oil paints, palettes, solvents, easels, protective aprons and other supplies.

You will need to bring your own 30 × 40 cm canvases and brushes from the second lesson onwards. During the first lesson, materials are provided and I’ll explain exactly what to buy and where to get it.

After each lesson, you’ll receive a home assignment to practise during the week.
